Things to Do in Pavones, Costa Rica
Pavones is built around one wave. That is why most people come, and it is what shapes the rhythm of a stay here. But a week at the camp is more than surf sessions and paddle-outs. The Golfo Dulce is one of the richest marine environments in Central America. The jungle starts where the beach ends. And on the days when the swell drops or your body needs a rest, there is enough around Pavones to fill the time well.
Surfing
The Pavones left-hand point break is the reason this place is on the map. On a solid south swell, the ride can run well over half a kilometer, making it one of the longest waves in the world. The camp is organized around making the most of it: early sessions when the surface is clean, recovery during the heat of the day, and a second look in the afternoon when conditions allow.

Sport Fishing
The Golfo Dulce is one of the most productive stretches of water on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. The combination of warm, sheltered gulf water and open ocean just beyond the mouth creates conditions that attract a wide range of species throughout the year.
What fishing in Pavones looks like:
- Nearshore trips target snook, jack, and roosterfish along the rocky points and river mouths
- Offshore trips reach blue water where tuna, mahi-mahi, and sailfish are common
- Half-day and full-day outings can be arranged around your surf schedule
Golfo Dulce Boat Tours
The Golfo Dulce is one of only four tropical fjords in the world. Its enclosed geography creates a body of water that is unusually calm, warm, and sheltered compared to the open Pacific. Marine life concentrates here in ways you rarely find elsewhere on the coast.
Boat tours explore the gulf by half-day or full day, moving between snorkeling spots, mangrove edges, and points of interest along the shoreline. The water is clear enough that marine encounters are common even from the surface.
Whale and Dolphin Watching
The Golfo Dulce sits along one of the main migration routes for humpback whales in the eastern Pacific. The gulf receives two distinct groups each year: southern hemisphere whales arriving between July and November, and northern hemisphere whales between December and April. Both windows offer genuine encounters at close range.
Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are present throughout the year and are regularly seen from boats regardless of the season. If your visit falls within either whale season, a dedicated tour is worth building into your week.
Wildlife Tours
Pavones sits at the edge of one of the most biodiverse corridors in Central America. The Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park are within reach, and the wildlife visible directly around the camp does not require a long excursion to find.
Scarlet macaws fly in pairs over the beach most mornings. Howler monkeys make themselves known at dawn and dusk. Playa Banco, a short distance south along the coast, is an active nesting site for sea turtles during nesting season. Guided tours cover the jungle trails, mangrove edges, and coastline, and can be arranged around your time in the water.
Yoga
Surfing and yoga complement each other in ways that become obvious after a few days. A session in the water tests your balance, shoulder strength, and hip flexibility in ways that most land-based training does not prepare you for. Yoga addresses exactly the areas that surfing loads, and the difference in how your body feels the next morning is real.
Sessions are available during your stay and can be fitted around the wave forecast. The setting helps: open air, jungle on three sides, and the sound of the ocean close enough to hear.
Horseback Riding
The trails around Pavones run through dense jungle, along stretches of coast, and across river crossings that reveal parts of the landscape a surfboard cannot take you to. Rides here move through working land and secondary forest, with wildlife sightings a regular part of the route.
Guided rides are suitable for most experience levels. A half-day on horseback is one of the more effective ways to understand how much is packed into this corner of Costa Rica.
ATV Rentals
The roads around Pavones are not built for standard vehicles. An ATV opens up the dirt tracks, river crossings, and hill routes that give you access to quieter stretches of coast and elevated viewpoints above the treeline.
Rentals can be arranged for a half-day or full day, with or without a guide. It is a practical choice for rest days when you want to cover ground on your own terms, and it gives you a direct feel for how remote and undeveloped this part of Costa Rica remains.
