Pavones Surf Camp, Southern Costa Rica

Pavones is one of those places surfers hear about long before they can find it on a map. A left-hand point break at the end of a dirt road in the far south of Costa Rica. Remote, uncrowded, and on a good swell, worth every hour of the journey to get there.

If you are looking to book a surf camp here, this is the right place to start.

One of the Longest Left-Hand Waves in the World

The Pavones wave breaks along a rocky point on the southern Pacific coast, inside the Golfo Dulce, close to the Panama border. On a solid south swell, the ride can run for over 700 meters. That puts it among the longest rideable lefts on the planet, and it is the single reason why surfers travel this far south.

What makes the wave worth the trip is its shape. At the right tide, Pavones offers a long, workable face with room to generate speed, set up turns, and actually think about what you're doing. First-timers often spend the first wave just figuring out what to do with all that space.

The swell window is seasonal. The wave is most consistent from April through October, when south swells push into the Golfo Dulce with regularity. For a fuller picture of when to come and what to expect in the water, read our guide to surfing Pavones.

What a Stay at the Camp Looks Like

Most days start early. The wave at Pavones is at its best before the wind picks up, and life at the camp is organized around that rhythm.

You surf, rest, and surf again when the conditions hold. Between sessions there is time to eat, recover, and slow down. The jungle runs right to the edge of the coast here, and the pace of Pavones is quiet in a way that most surfers either take a day to get used to or fall into immediately.

Accommodation and meals are part of the package. The setup is simple and focused: you are here for the wave, and the practical details are taken care of so nothing gets in the way of that.

Who This Camp Is For

Pavones is not a beginner break. The point format, the shore break on the way out, and the length of the rides all assume a certain baseline. This camp is the right fit if you:

  • Can paddle out comfortably through an unprotected shore break
  • Are at ease surfing in a lineup with other people
  • Have been surfing for at least a couple of years and are looking to push your level on a real wave
  • Want a trip organized around one specific, meaningful break, not a resort with surfing on the activity list
  • Are done with crowded, tourist-heavy lineups

Intermediate and advanced surfers get the most out of Pavones. If you are earlier in your surfing, a camp at a more beginner-friendly spot will serve you better now, and Pavones will be here when you're ready.

Getting Here

Most travelers fly into San José and connect to Golfito on a short domestic flight. From Golfito, Pavones is roughly an hour and a half by road. The last section is unpaved, and a 4x4 is worth having.

The distance is part of what keeps the lineup from getting crowded. Pavones is not on the way to anything else. You go there specifically, and that intention tends to shape the kind of people who show up.

Once you arrive, there is not much: a few local places to eat, a general store, and the wave. That is exactly the point.

What Guests Say

The feedback that comes back most consistently is not about the amenities or the food. It is about the wave: surfers who thought they knew what to expect, and found themselves at the end of the week still trying to make sense of how good it was.

"I came in expecting a long wave, but not that long. My first proper ride felt endless, and by day three I was finally starting to use the wave instead of just surviving it. The camp kept everything simple so all I had to focus on was surfing."
Alex M., USA
"What stood out was how quiet and focused the whole experience is. You wake up, surf, eat, rest, and do it again. No distractions, no crowds, just a world-class wave and a place set up perfectly around it."
Julien R., France
"I've surfed a lot of point breaks, but Pavones is different. The length of the rides changes how you think about surfing completely. The team made the logistics easy, and the small group size made a big difference in the water."
Mark T., Australia

Before You Book

What surfing level do I need?
The Pavones wave is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. You should be comfortable paddling out in open water, reading a lineup, and riding unbroken waves with some control. If you are still working through the fundamentals, this wave will be more frustrating than rewarding at this stage.
When is the best time to visit?
April through October is the primary swell season. South swells generated in the southern hemisphere push into the Golfo Dulce with the most consistency during these months. Pavones can produce waves at other times of year, but planning around the southern swell season gives you the best odds of scoring good conditions.
What is included in the camp?
Accommodation and meals are included. Surfing, with coaching and guidance, is the focus of each day. For a full overview of what the camp offers, visit the things to do in Pavones. For current availability and specifics, the clearest answer comes directly from the team.
